What Is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is an ancient practice of developing harmony between body, mind and spirit. It is an exploration of who we are as human beings. It teaches us to be mindful of our thoughts and emotions, and it helps us heal both physically and internally. To master yoga is to master yourself; to dwell firm in the present moment.

Energy Work

Although kundalini yoga consists hugely of exercise, its nature is different from what we are used to. Instead of building physical strength or fitness, in yoga we work with the body's energy system to heal, clear cellular memory and the subconscious mind. Yoga works on all levels of our being, allowing us to constantly discover new depths within.

Techniques

In kundalini yoga we work a lot with pranayama (breathing), mantra (sound current) and mudra (hand position). We use asanas (yoga poses) sequenced in kriyas (yoga sets) to achieve various effects. Each set comes from a centuries-old tradition, designed by yoga masters of the past and passed on through generations.

"Yoga is not a thing you do to get better at something. It is an awakening to the subtle world within."

~ Harjeet

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

16. Why do we chant mantras in kundalini yoga?
Mantras are perhaps the thing that puts people off the most. It seems akin to singing, and many people feel too embarrassed to chant. Chanting is also often associated with religious worship - which is a notion that couldn't be more wrong. Actually, mantras are all about science. Modern medicine acknowledges that sound has the power to heal. When we chant, we create a vibration and direct it within our body, reaching every cell. Everything is a wave, our thoughts and emotions as well. Those waves have frequencies, low - negative and high - positive. Chanting a mantra we can raise the vibration of our electromagnetic field, filling it with higher feelings such as love, peace and joy. Nothing mystical about that. There is much more to mantra, that we explore in detail in Yoga Theory Course. But for now, know that if you don't want to, nobody forces you to chant mantras. We encourage you to give it a try though - it can be an amazing experience.
17. I don't feel tired; should I still relax after the practice?
Absolutely yes. Kundalini yoga can at times be very subtle. The fact that we didn't do anything physically tiring doesn't mean that we haven't released potent energy. Your body needs this time to assimilate the subtle effects of the practice; if you don't relax, sometimes you might find your system in utter chaos the next day.
18. I did the practice as instructed but I don't feel any better.
Contrary to the popular belief, kundalini yoga is not necessarily supposed to make you calmed and relaxed. Kundalini practices have the power to transform your life, and they do it by confronting you with your inner demons. Sometimes you will have a tranquil and peaceful experience, but other times you will be so angry you will want to throttle your teacher, or so sad you won't be able to stop crying. And at other times, you won't feel anything at all. All of this is completely normal. Just let the process unfold - we assure you, you will benefit in the long run.

Benefits

There are many benefits to the practice of Kundalini Yoga. Yoga will help you heal your body and maintain it in good shape. It will calm your mind and increase your self-awareness. It will teach you to remain mindful, absorbed in the present moment. And finally, it will expand your understanding of yourself, your life and the world around you.
