What Is Truth?

In many spiritual teachings you can see the word Truth. You have undoubtedly heard many times things such as "you must release your subconscious pain - karma - to be able to live Truth" or "Truth is obtained to the degree that false believes and perception are overcome". But what does it mean, really? What is Truth?

Most people see Truth as absolute - as some sort of universally true fact. The human mind wants something straightforward and easy to hold on to; something that explains the universe and our place in it. Personally, I doubt that such Truth exists. Truth is a spiritual concept, and therefore, it points to meaning that is beyond the capacity of the mind to understand. I would say that in its essence, Truth is somewhat akin to words such as God, Consciousness, or the Present Moment. For people strongly identified with their minds, it is incredibly easy to be confused by such words; and thus, they ascribe them meaning that not only they do not possess, but that is often completely ridiculous. Words that carry Truth by nature do not have intellectual meaning. Instead, they hold a certain power - the power to awaken you to Consciousness.

You see, one of the assumptions of spirituality is that we live in a world where everything is a lie. The thoughts and concepts that inhabit our minds constitute our perception of reality - and somehow, we have been fed thoughts that cause us to view the world in a way that causes great suffering; to us, and to others. Many people are so consumed by this illusion of perception that they don't even know they are suffering; a delusional state has become normal to them. But there are some of us who see that what the mind offers is empty. There are some of us who know that there is something wrong in the way this world seems to be. There are some of us who want - no, desperately need - something more. These people are called spiritual seekers. We begin to wonder, to question; to look for answers within rather than without. And it is within where we find Truth - something beyond mere words, but with deep meaning; something that just feels right.

So in conclusion, Truth doesn't have anything to do with a statement being true or false. Truth is not a description of how things are, nor an ultimate moral code or set of beliefs we could follow. Rather, Truth is an inner sense of depth, an awareness beyond the mind that liberates our spirit. The more we know Truth, the less we are pulled by the events of this world; no matter what happens here, we dwell in the kingdom within. With the knowledge of Truth comes the ultimate freedom - the freedom from this world.
